How to create client variations

Client variations let you track changes to the original contract and reflect them both in the client contract and the project budget. If you don’t have a client contract set up, see how to create a client contract.

Note: If you’re not using client contracts, see how to create client variations in the budget overview.

Steps

  1. Open the relevant project.
  2. In the project menu, go to Client Contract and open the contract you want to update.
  3. Scroll down past the list of contracted items and click Add Variation.
  4. Enter a name for the variation (e.g. “VO1”).
  5. In the Line item drop-down, select how the variation should be linked to your budget:
    • Existing item – Connect the variation to an existing line in the budget.
    • New line item – Add a new top-level line item to the budget, not tracked as a variation.
    • New variation – Create a variation that appears in the Variations list in the budget. This option is not linked to any existing item—it adds a new variation in both the contract and budget simultaneously.
  6. If you choose New variation, fill out the following in the pop-up:
    • Variation item name
    • Parent item (for grouping)
    • Sales price
    • Target cost
  7. Complete the remaining variation fields:
    • Unit of measurement
    • Quantity
    • Unit price (sales price per unit)
Note: If you only want to enter a total value, input the total and the system will auto-fill quantity and unit price as “1”.
  8. Click Add Variation to save it.

The variation is now linked to both the client contract and the project budget.
